microsoft announces windows 7 prices Microsoft-Announces-Windows-7-Prices

October 22 will be here before you know it, and that means that in just a few months, PC users everywhere will finally be getting their hands on Microsoft's new operating system Windows 7. Until now though, the prices of the various versions (full and/or upgrade) were the only major unknowns left to be revealed. Well, wonder no more.

Microsoft has announced that Windows 7 will be priced in the US as such:

* Windows 7 Home Premium (Upgrade): $119.99, (Full): $199.99
* Windows 7 Professional (Upgrade): $199.99, (Full): $299.99
* Windows 7 Ultimate (Upgrade): $219.99, (Full): $319.99

Microsoft has also announced that starting tomorrow, anyone who buys a new PC from select retailers will be given the option of upgrading to a comparable version of Windows 7 for "little or no cost to customers," which I'm going to assume means "expect to pay something."

Also, to sweeten the deal even more for potential Windows 7 adopters, for a limited time, certain retailers in certain markets including Amazon, Best Buy, and Microsoft's own online store will be offering a 50 percent discount if you preorder Windows 7 Home Premium ($49.99) or Windows 7 Professional ($99.99).

I guess Microsoft can stop worrying about price being as significant a deterrent as analysts have predicted it would be, especially since the Windows 7 launch prices for the Home Premium and Ultimate editions are noticeably lower than they were when Vista launched (The Business/Professional edition is priced the same). Of course, the 50 percent deal only lasts until July 11 in the US, July 5 in Japan, and August 14 in the UK, France and Germany.

Even if you've finally managed to corral Vista into a stable and workable OS, it's kind of hard to argue with $50 for a new (albeit incredibly similar) operating system that will hopefully deliver the kind of experience users were promised back when Vista was initially launched. Of course, this would require a bit of a leap on faith on your part that Microsoft can deliver a functioning and workable product on day one, and that might be asking too much.

Anyone planning on preordering Windows 7? Are you satisfied with the various price points for Windows 7?
