Devil, also known as The Night Chronicles: Devil, is a 2010 supernatural thriller based on the story by M. Night Shyamalan, written by Brian Nelson and directed by John Erick Dowdle. Devil is the first of The Night Chronicles trilogy which was released on September 17th 2010.

The plot itself is rather simple although some clever twists are thrown in; changing the audiences’ opinions more than once. If anything the movie is made to make the audience jump with the unexpected deaths and sudden flashes which reveal more horrors, including screaming faces, unidentifiable creatures etc. I wouldn’t class it as a real horror as it isn’t actually all that scary but if you enjoy the supernatural then it might fall into your radar of films. The story follows five different people who end up trapped inside of an elevator oblivious to the fact that one of them is in fact the Devil.

As the story progresses it is revealed that each character trapped in the elevator has committed various crimes in past. The five strangers include Ben (Bokeem Woodbine), a temporary security guard with a violent past; an elderly woman (Jenny O'Hara) who is a compulsive thief; Vince (Geoffrey Arend), a mattress salesman who moonlights as a con artist; Tony (Logan Marshall-Green), a former mechanic who served in the U.S. military during the War in Afghanistan who is now seeking employment within the building; and Sarah (Bojana Novakovic), a greedy heiress meeting with her lawyer in the building.

The movie gives off a real intense atmosphere as most of the movie is filmed from a CCTV point of view with several security guards watching. To me this gave the film more edge and did make it slightly scarier. Although Devil isn’t a real horror I found myself watching the screen at all times; barely blinking just in case I missed one small detail which could add to the storyline. The film is very absorbing and the fact that you don’t know what’s going to happen next makes it even better.

Overall the film was worth seeing although many areas of it could have been improved. It’s a good film to watch if there’s not a lot else on and you just want to go out with a few friends. I highly recommend it if you’re into supernatural films and original storylines. Although, if you are looking for a real horror then I wouldn’t recommend Devil. On the other hand it might be better to buy the DVD instead since I was slightly disappointed with the film (the ending ruined it for me) and felt like I’d wasted my £7.50. Nevertheless this is just my opinion and you can only find out what the movie is like when you watch it.
