Steam!
I don't ask often for help with computer problems, but the problem I'm having is to do with Steam and we all know what a b@stard that can be.
The problem is this, I can't open Steam and I get this error message. Clicking retry doesn't slove the problem as you get the Window error message: Steam has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
I've reinstall Java and it is working fine, but no difference. I've back up the "Steam App" folder and deleted Steam, restart the PC and reinstall Steam, but no difference. I've finally manage, (after several attempts over the last few months), to download and install IE 8, but no difference.
The only two things I've done to the system in the last 24 hours is update my graphics drivers, but after I did that I play TF2 for a couple of hours last night without any problems. I also got a new game today "The Secret to Monkey Island", which I was playing this morning through Steam and anything was fine. Problems started when I tried to load up Steam tonight.

Re: Steam!
Rather cut my own b#ll#cks off. I think that would be more helpful, when it comes to Valve and Steam. lol
If anyone sees Lewis on Steam tell him to get his @ss over to forum, he's quite good with Steam problems.
UPDATE
I've spent 2 hours repairing Windows XP and downloading all the updates, but no difference!

Re: Steam!
I did everything you said, but no difference. I've also put the graphics drivers onto an older different version, but it hasn't solved the problem.
Re: Steam!
After some manic button bashing the Ignore button on the Error message, it finally force Steam to boot. After several failed attempts, it finally let me into Steam. It's far from prefect, but at least I'm in the damn thing.
Re: Steam!
I now agree with Lewis, the problem must lies with Windows or/and Internet Explorer, as this is what what steam is built on, (no wonder Steam is a buggy piece of of s#it, which it is if this built on IE code!).
I found this topic on the Steam forum, which pointed to IE as the problem.
I did Scan Disk this morning and System File Checker, which did nothing, apart from when I have Steam set to open when Windows starts, I don't get the error. I'd prefer not to have Steam load every time I get into Windows, but if it means getting it to work, so be it. Not a perfect solution, but a solution non the less.
I will still welcome ideas to how to properly fix it though, without having to format the PC and reload anything.

Re: Steam!
Well it seems the problem has sorted itself out now. After a few days of having Steam automatically load up when Windows starts, I can now open it manually and I don't get the error message anymore. So f#ck knows why it was being awkward with me, but I like to say thank you to everyone who helped out and I can't wait till Valve rewrite Steam and not use some code which is buggy to base their browser on.
